Seattle, Bellevue How soon after a facelift can I work out? Michele G.

Hi Michele, you can resume exercise 3-4 weeks after surgery. The level of impact makes a huge difference and the healing process will be improved by light cardio workout. If you’re a runner, It cannot be stressed enough how important sun protection is for the health of your skin pre-facelift and it’s especially important post-facelift.  Sunscreen or sunblock will protect your skin from the sun’s rays. Make every effort to wear an SPF 20 screen daily and to reapply it often.  Frequent application is important if you’re sweating or swimming.  It’s important to shield your scars from the sun because they will stay red longer and may not fade as expected.  There may be discoloration of the incision sites.  Wear a hat with a big brim and a pair of sunglasses for even more protection from the sun.  Take care to continue applying the antibiotic cream to calm down the sore/raised scars.

Seattle, Bellevue What is the age limit for face lift surgery? Edwin D.

Hi Edwin, more than age, skin elasticity and overall health have more bearing on a patient’s ability to undergo this procedure.  However, majority of those that undergo this procedure are between 40-70 y.o.   Furthermore, those over 50 are turning to cosmetic surgery to look better through facelifts, laser skin resurfacing, Botox treatment and blepharoplasty surgery. The upper age limit very much depends on the individual’s state of health.  Because surgery is performed under deep IV sedation or general anesthesia, it is important that one’s internist agrees that surch surgery is a reasonable pursuit.  Recovery is relatively fast  and provided you are in good health and have realistic goals, this can be a very reasonable choice.  No one is too old to feel refreshed and rejuvenated. So, if you feel as though a facelift surgery will give you a reinvigorated look, and considering you are a healthy individual, I recommend that you move forward with the cosmetic procedure despite your apprehension about age. It is best to consult a board ccertified doctor to determine what you need,  It is important for seniors underging such procedures to bear in mind that they will not look 20 years younger, but will certainly look more youthful.

Seattle, Bellevue Can sunblock cause an infection of face lift scars? Al P.

Hi Al, sun protection is very important for the health of your skin post-a facelift.  In fact, it is one of 4 cardinal rules that must be observed during cosmetic surgery recovery. The first few days after having a procedure, it’s best to avoid direct sunlight.  If you need to go out, choose a sunscreen that blocks alpha and beta sun rays.  An SPF 30 or 40 Is sufficient; using the ones with higher SPF tends to block the pores. Second, baby your skin with mild hypoallergenic products like non-soap cleansers and fragrance free moisturizers. Third, let your wounds heal – don’t pick at your peeling skin or scabs to speed up your recovery as this can increase the likelihood of infections/scarring.  Lastly, hydrate as much as possible.  Whether you’ve had a minor procedure or a major surgery, drink 6-8 glasses of water/day to help rejuvenate your skin from the inside and flush any toxins from your system.

Seattle, Bellevue How Much Younger Does a Face Lift Make You Look? Owen M.

Hi Owen, a study in the journal, Archive s of Facial Plastic Surgery, suggests that facial surgery reduces a person’s outward age by 6-8 years, depending on the extent of the procedure. But more than sell more plastic surgery procedures, the author of the study hopes that the data will temper patients’ hopes for what a plastic surgeon can achieve.  On average, patients were said to be 7.2 years younger in their after photo than in their before photo. Also, the more work a person had done, the younger they tended to look afterward. People who had a face-lift and neck lift looked an average of 5.7 years younger post-surgery. Adding in eyelid work shaved off nearly two additional years, and adding a forehead lift on top of that took off about another year. People who had all four procedures were said to look 8.4 years younger in their after picture.  However, it’s important to remember that age is only one of the several factors that matter to patients.  Patients want to look rejuvenated, more refreshed, less tired,” but most of all, they don’t want to look operated on or unnatural.”

Seattle, Bellevue How can I speed up healing of the scars I got from face lift surgery? Rosanne R.

Hi Rosanne, you didn’t mention how long ago you had your face lift.  But let me share general guidelines on post op care for those who’ve undergone face lift surgery.  You will need to cleanse the incisions gently three times a day with a mixture of 50% hydrogen peroxide and 50% water solution using cotton or Q-tips. After each cleansing, lightly apply antibacterial ointment to the incision lines. Avoid prolonged exposure to extremely cold temperatures.  Any exposure to the sun (including sun-tanning parlours) in the first 3 weeks after surgery may result in prolonged facial swelling and injury to the skin. From day 14 – 21, continue to avoid touching the incision lines and gently wash them as directed by your doctorSun exposure while the incision sites are still healing can cause them to darken or discolour, and that discoloration can be permanent. The first few weeks after surgery, avoid all sun exposure. Sunscreen of at least SPF 20 should be used. daily and reapplied often. Wearing a hat with a big brim and a pair of sunglasses will offer even more protection from the sun.  Take care to continue applying the antibiotic cream should you have any sore/raised scars.
